Yesterday I was feeling very nervous for my upcoming pitch. Unfortunately due to university work and my job I have not been able to spend the full amount of time I have wanted to and felt uncomfortable about presenting to a room of people. I let my nerves get in the way and did not work very efficiently. This was a very emotional response and I regret not finding a productive way to combat it.
In response to this, today I asked a member of the sales team if I could sit in on their pitch meeting to take some notes:
This was very useful and made me consider the importance of communication in a pitch outside of verbal communication. I thought it was interesting how Kirsty used her body language to appear very confident, she also advised me on the importance of dressing smartly too.
I also interviewed my supervisor on what she recommends in order to give a successful pitch and developed what she told me into a mindmap:
Having identified from both Kirtsy and Kim that body language is very important so I decided to research it. First I looked at Mark Bowden's winning body language where he noted that the most important thing to build in a pitch is trust, he suggests 'trust is the key to business' (Bowden, 2010). I then looked at a suggested reading, The Psychology of interpersonal behaviour by Michael Argyle where he suggests that intimacy comes from ‘Physical proximity, eye contact, facial expression (smiling) … warm tone of voice’ (Argyle, 1994). I will implement this into my pitch in order to build a trustworthy rapport with the 'client'.
Researching and asking for advice on my pitch has made me feel a lot more comfortable about my upcoming meeting. Although I still feel nervous, I have learned techniqes to appear more confident in my ideas.
