Yesterday I was feeling very nervous for my upcoming pitch. Unfortunately due to university work and my job I have not been able to spend the full amount of time I have wanted to and felt uncomfortable about presenting to a room of people. I let my nerves get in the way and did not work very efficiently. This was a very emotional response and I regret not finding a productive way to combat it. In response to this, today I asked a member of the sales team if I could sit in on their pitch meeting to take some notes: This was very useful and made me consider the importance of communication in a pitch outside of verbal communication. I thought it was interesting how Kirsty used her body language to appear very confident, she also advised me on the importance of dressing smartly too. I also interviewed my supervisor on what she recommends in order to give a successful pitch and developed what she told me into a mindmap: Having identified from both Kirtsy and Kim that body langu...

Slow Work Day

As it is getting closer and closer to Christmas, I am finding less and less tasks arriving in my work inbox because most of our clients have already booked their Christmas ad-time. Unfortunately, this means that over the past week I have been struggling to effectively fill my time and help the business while I am working there. While I have been struggling to fill my time, a lot of my colleagues have been very busy and I feel uncomfortable bothering them to ask what they need doing. This can make me feel a bit lost and like my role is not very important. On reflection, I know I have to be a bit more pro-active and confident. As an intern in a new job I often suffer from imposter-syndrome, however, the best way to get over this is to ask more questions and offer help whenever I can.

Creative Inspiration

In the development of my pitch, I have been really struggling to come up with a creative idea. After brainstorming a range of solutions to the brief I did not feel confident in any of my ideas so decided to look into creativity and creative thinking. Upon researching some of Seth Godin's work on creativity I came upon a blog post of his: (Godin, 2014) This blog post really helped me to understand that the power of a creative solution is that there is no right answer - my pitch allows me to SELL this solution! I need to come up with what I BELIEVE is the right answer and ride this out. I can use this pitch as a learning opportunity. I now understand that the most important part of a creative solution is riding it out and learning from it.

Time Management

Recently I have really been struggling with time management. My busy schedule means that I often end up compromising and not being able to put the maximum effort I would like to put into my job, my placement or university. An example of this was last week when unfortunately a very busy week meant I mixed up the days of when I was in work and placement and was left panicking at the last minute, having to email my placement supervisor to let him know I wouldn't be in. At the time this made me feel very guilty and embarrassed at my lack of organisation, as in a real workplace this would not be acceptable. I sent an apology to my supervisor and promised it wouldn't happen again and explained the situation, fortunately, my placement was very understanding. I want to make sure this doesn't happen again, therefore, I have planned out a schedule for the next month to make sure I can fit in everything. I need to remember next time that not everyone is perfect and sometimes people ma...

TV Advert

Today I was a runner on the set of a TV advert the station had been commissioned to develop. At first, I felt very nervous as I had never had experience working on a professional set before. To combat this I tried to keep myself busy and made myself useful where ever I could. It was interesting to watch the filming process, it helped me to understand the organisational process that the team have to go to. All of their shots were planned and listed so they could be as efficient with their time as possible - it was all listed on a spreadsheet with the shot description. While the actors and the team were on a break I made sure to help out my cleaning up and tidying the set, the director praised me for being so proactive and said that he really appreciated my help. This really assured me and combatted the nerves I was feeling at the beginning of the shoot. On reflection, next time I need to try not being so nervous and trust my instincts, I hope this process will help me be more confid...
